Recently, the 9th International Forum on Advanced Battery Electrolyte/Separator Material Technologies was held. As a global leader in the lithium battery separator industry, SEMCORP was invited to attend. Dr. Sun Minqiang, a separator technology expert at SEMCORP, delivered a keynote speech titled "Towards Fluorine-Free Multifunctional Separators: Synergistic Design of Adhesion Enhancement and Thermal Safety," sharing SEMCORP's latest R&D achievements in the field of fluorine-free separators.
The report pointed out that as the "heart valve" of the battery, the separator faces three rigid demands: environmental protection, safety, and performance. The EU PFAS regulations are driving the fluorine-free transition, while the risk of battery thermal runaway and high-end applications impose stricter requirements on separator performance, propelling separator technology toward multifunctional integration.

Dr. Sun Minqiang highlighted SEMCORP's innovative practices. By selecting polyolefin as the core substrate, the solution delivers multiple advantages, including environmental friendliness, low swelling, thermal safety, and strong adhesion. Two solutions have been introduced — pure polyolefin and polyolefin/ceramic coating — which significantly lower the separator’s shutdown temperature and enable an earlier thermal response, thereby markedly enhancing thermal safety. At the same time, the adhesion strength surpasses that of traditional PVDF coatings. In battery evaluations, cells equipped with this separator passed heavy impact and hot box tests, and exhibited a capacity retention rate exceeding 91% after 1,000 cycles, achieving a dual leap in safety and electrical performance.
